A four-tiered hill in the village of St John's where the Isle of Man's parliament has met in the open air for centuries — the oldest continuous parliament in the world, and free to visit any day of the year.
A four-tiered mound around 12 feet high, thought to have been built in the 13th century using soil from each of the Island's 17 ancient parishes. You can walk up to the top tier where parliament is proclaimed, past a standing stone at the foot.
Opposite the hill, Fairfield House holds free exhibitions on Tynwald and Manx culture, including a Lego model of Tynwald Day, a language and music room, short films and a gift shop.
A 25-acre park a few minutes' walk away, with trees from the Island's 17 parishes, a pond for feeding the ducks, a children's playground and a sheltered picnic area with views over St Johns.
The hill stands at the head of the Royal Chapel of St John's, linked by the processional way down which the Tynwald ceremony processes. Ancient graves and a temple to the Norse god Thor have been found near the church.
Once a year the open-air Tynwald Ceremony brings the Island's parliament to the hill, when new laws are proclaimed and public petitions are presented.
