Peel Beach is a wide, sheltered golden-sand bay on the Isle of Man's west coast, framed by the ruins of Peel Castle, a working fishing harbour and red sandstone cliffs — and famous as the island's "Sunset City".
A large, gently sloping stretch of sand protected by two breakwaters, with calm water that suits swimming, sunbathing and family days out. The beach runs from the harbour and castle on one side to the sandstone cliffs and Peel Hill on the other.
Medieval Peel Castle sits on St Patrick's Isle at the south end of the beach, with a coastal footpath circling it for panoramic views. The harbour is the island's main fishing port, and seals are regularly seen around the breakwater where the River Neb meets the sea.
Peel faces west, so evenings bring spectacular sunsets behind the castle ruins; on clear days the Mountains of Mourne are visible across the Irish Sea. It is one of the island's favourite sunset-watching spots.
The rocks around the castle and the end of the harbour wall offer easy-access fishing for mackerel, pollack, wrasse and conger eel, with the best results on the incoming tide. There is no lifeguard cover, so take care near the water.
The beach sits on the Raad ny Foillan coastal footpath. The 6-mile Niarbyl-to-Peel stage finishes at Fenella Beach and passes Glen Maye's waterfall; from the west end you can climb Peel Hill to Corrin's Tower for views back over the bay.
Next to the castle lies tiny, sheltered Fenella Beach, one of the island's most photographed coves. In town you'll find the House of Manannan, Leece Museum, Cathedral Isle of Man and Moore's Kipper Yard.
