A hauntingly beautiful 13th-century Cistercian abbey nestled in a wooded valley on the Hook Peninsula, where medieval ruins meet a restored Georgian walled garden and miles of waymarked woodland trails.
Wander through the remains of the nave, chancel, tower, chapel and cloister of this Cistercian monastery founded c.1200 by William Marshal. Look up at the carved corbel tables — 22 monster and beast heads adorn the chancel's outer walls. After the Dissolution, the Colclough family converted parts of the abbey into a fortified residence; their battlements still crown the ruins.
A 5-minute walk from the abbey, this 2.5-acre early-19th-century walled garden is split into ornamental and kitchen sections by a brick wall, with a stream crossed by five bridges. Heritage apples, vegetables, and vibrant flowerbeds supply the on-site tearooms. Look out for Tintern honey and cider for sale.
Five waymarked looped trails start from the abbey trailhead, ranging from the easy 1 km Gardener's Trail (20 min) to the 11 km Caesar Colclough Trail (3+ hrs) with coastal views over Bannow Bay. In spring, woodlands are carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic. Download the trail map before you go.
Free 45-minute guided tours run daily from March to October (included in admission). Guides bring the abbey's 800-year story to life — from Cistercian monks to the Colclough family who lived here until 1959. Max 40–45 people; groups should book ahead.
The visitor centre houses a museum covering the abbey's monastic origins, the Colclough era, and modern conservation — including the protected bat colonies that roost in the ruins.
