About

An immersive, multi-sensory guided tour through 300 years of Irish brewing history at the old St Francis Abbey Brewery on Kilkenny's Medieval Mile, finishing with a perfectly poured pint of Ireland's oldest ale.

Things to Do

Signature Smithwick's Experience Tour

The classic 45-minute guided tour takes you on an interactive journey from the 13th-century Franciscan monks through John Smithwick's 1710 brewing legacy. You'll mill malt, stir the mash, smell the hops, and encounter living portraits and holograms along the way. Ends with a complimentary pint of Smithwick's (over 18s) or a soft drink. Audio guides available in French, German, Spanish, and Italian.

Signature Smithwick's Experience Tour

Masters of Ale Experience

A premium 75-minute sensorial deep-dive for over-18s only. Includes a tasting masterclass of four different ales, a guided tutorial on pouring the perfect pint, and a personalised engraved glass to take home. You'll isolate the senses and break down raw ingredients across different ale styles.

The Barrel Yard

A heated outdoor beer garden in the historic former brewery yard where wooden barrels were once repaired and stored. Open weekends spring through autumn (12–7pm), with free entry. From May to September, weekend 'Barrel Yard Sessions' bring live music and rotating food trucks — Indian, BBQ, pizza, Caribbean and more. A full bar serves Smithwick's on tap alongside low and non-alcoholic options.
