One of Ireland's finest surfing beaches, Rossnowlagh unfurls 3–4 km of soft golden sand along Donegal Bay. Gentle, consistent waves make it ideal for beginners, while the Blue Flag waters, spectacular sunsets, and the rare freedom to park right on the strand give it a charm all its own.
Rossnowlagh is one of Ireland's top surfing destinations — the funnel shape of Donegal Bay generates reliable swell year-round, with winter waves reaching up to 7 metres. Two well-reviewed surf schools operate here: Rossnowlagh Surf School (ISA-qualified, founded by local surfer James Garvey) and Fin McCool Surf School. Both offer beginner lessons, intermediate coaching, kids' camps, and equipment rental. Wetsuits and boards are provided.
As a Blue Flag beach, Rossnowlagh meets high standards for water quality, safety, and cleanliness. Lifeguards patrol daily from June to September (11am–7pm). Swim between the red-and-yellow flags. The gently sloping beach is safe for bathing and popular with families. An AED is kept at the lifeguard station.
The wide, firm sand is excellent for walking — you can stroll the full 3–4 km from the Coolmore cliffs in the south to the rocky outcrop at Carrickfad. At low tide, it's sometimes possible to continue along the shore all the way to Murvagh Beach. The Brew Box coffee trailer near the beach is the perfect pit stop.
Perched overlooking Donegal Bay, this early-1900s pub and restaurant is a local institution. Open 7 days a week from late May through summer (Thursday–Sunday in May), with food served daily from 12:30pm. The conservatory restaurant serves fresh Irish seafood and produce; outdoor dining and a beer garden are available. B&B rooms from €55–€80 pppn.
A short walk from the beach, this peaceful friary (established 1946, church dedicated 1952) welcomes visitors to explore tranquil gardens, the 'Way of the Cross' cliff walk with stunning bay views, and a small shop selling religious items and mass cards. The friary also houses the County Donegal Historical Society Museum. Church open daily 9am–5pm; shop open 11:30am–5pm (Sun) and 10:30am–5pm (Mon–Sat).
Rossnowlagh is a great base for exploring south Donegal. Bundoran (15 min drive) offers more surfing, coastal walks and amusements. Donegal Town (20 min) has Donegal Castle, the Waterbus, and plentiful restaurants. The mighty Slieve League sea cliffs — among Europe's highest — are about 45 minutes away.
