A secluded, south-facing sandy cove tucked beneath rugged cliffs near Minane Bridge — loved by locals for wild swimming, peaceful sunbathing, and its raw, unspoilt character along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Sheltered and south-facing, Rocky Bay is one of Cork's favourite open-water swimming spots. The water holds Green Coast status for quality. No lifeguards are on duty, so swim with caution and never alone. The gentle waves make it family-friendly in calm conditions.
The fine golden sand is ideal for sunbathing and sandcastles — but check the tide first. At high tide the beach can shrink dramatically; at low tide the sandy shelf extends much further out. Winter storms have been known to shift sand levels significantly, so expect a different beach from one season to the next.
A headland walk leads from Rocky Bay towards neighbouring Roberts Cove. Midway along the cliffs stands a well-preserved signal tower built in 1806 to watch for Napoleonic invasion. It doubled as a film set for a TV adaptation of Treasure Island starring Eddie Izzard. The cliffs offer excellent sea views and birdwatching — look for fulmars, black guillemots, and choughs.
Just 1.8 km east, Roberts Cove is Rocky Bay's smaller, quieter neighbour — a picturesque village beach with its own charm. The Roberts Cove Inn serves seafood and drinks, making it the nearest spot for a post-swim meal or pint.
