A small Coillte woodland near Coachford where the Glashagarriff River tumbles through a steep, mossy glen into the Poulanassig waterfall and its plunge pool. Two linked trails, under 2 km in all, let you see it from above and from the water's edge.
The main attraction, reached about 0.75 km west of the entrance. The Glashagarriff River pours over blackened boulders into a deep pool ringed by high, wooded banks. It is loudest and most dramatic after rain, and folklore says a mermaid lives in the pool.
This path drops steeply from the car park and follows the Glashagarriff through the valley floor to the waterfall. It is worn and muddy after rain or in winter, so wear proper footwear.
A flatter, hard-cored path cut around the side of the glen, giving balcony-like views down over the wood, river and waterfall before ending behind the falls. Take care where steep sides are exposed.
The wood's name means 'mill of the waterfall', and a house now stands on the old mill site; look for mill races and sluice pillars. At the eastern end is Aghavrin Clapper Bridge, an old stone-slab footbridge.
Douglas fir, oak, Sitka spruce and Japanese larch fill this eight-hectare wood, with wildflowers and exposed roots along the paths. Tales of a mermaid combing her hair by the pool add to the atmosphere.
