A riverside 16th-century fortified house ruin set in 84 acres of interconnected parkland, complete with a rare herd of white fallow deer — right in the heart of Mallow town.
The striking 16th-century fortified house — among the earliest of its kind in Cork — stands roofless but impressive, with polygonal turrets, mullioned windows, and gun loops. It replaced a 13th-century Norman castle whose remnants also survive on site. Note: as of 2025, the National Monument is closed for ongoing works (external viewing only).
A herd of white fallow deer grazes the castle grounds — all descended from two bucks gifted by Queen Elizabeth I to a previous owner around 1600. They're most often seen sunning themselves in the summer months.
Over 5 km of smooth, interconnected pathways link Mallow Castle Grounds with Mallow Town Park and the Lower Park. The route follows the River Blackwater, with fishing stands, benches, and pedestrian bridges along the way — suitable for walkers, runners, and cyclists.
A recently built natural playground in the castle grounds features castle turrets with large slides, a zip line, climbing walls, basket swings, sand and water play areas, hammocks, and an assault course. Fully gated at the entrance. Popular with families across Cork.
The restored walled garden sits within the grounds, while the Tudor-style Spa House (1828) overlooks the spring that made Mallow a fashionable spa resort in the 18th century. It now houses the tourist information office.
