Mallow Town Park is the green heart of north Cork: a free riverside park on the Blackwater that links into Mallow Castle's grounds as one 84-acre amenity, home to a herd of white fallow deer.
Mallow Town Park, Mallow Castle Grounds and the Lower Park are joined into one 84-acre amenity, threaded with more than 5 km of flat pathways for walkers, runners and cyclists. The riverside path runs along the Blackwater and passes under the northern eye of Mallow Bridge.
The park runs into the castle grounds, where the leucistic white deer herd keeps near the tree lines. Local tradition traces the herd to two bucks given to a former castle owner by Queen Elizabeth I; the grounds are free to enter.
The castle-side playground is the busiest draw for families, built around a dragon-shaped chair children queue to sit in. A newer skate park opened on Park Road in 2023.
Quiet ponds and riverbank draw herons, ducks and swans, with fish in the water. The Blackwater is a noted salmon and trout river, and new angling stands have been built on its banks; day permits are sold locally.
The central lawns are circled by a main loop path with quieter branches down to the water and woodland. There is plenty of seating and open lawn for a packed lunch, though litter bins are scarce, so bring a bag for your rubbish.
