A wild, windswept headland at the very top of Ireland, where a 220-year-old signal tower surveys the Atlantic from Banba's Crown — also a Star Wars filming location and one of the country's best spots for the Northern Lights.
The stone tower here was built in 1805 as a Napoleonic lookout, later used by Lloyd's of London to relay shipping news and by Marconi for the first commercial wireless transmission in 1902. The interior is closed, but the windswept vantage point over the Atlantic is the real draw. This is officially Ireland's most northerly point on the mainland.
A well-maintained 2.5km loop trail starts from the car park and takes about an hour at a moderate pace. It links all the key sights: the tower, the EIRE sign, Hell's Hole, the Scheildren rock formations, and the northernmost viewpoint. The path is mostly gravel but becomes rockier in places — sturdy footwear is essential.
A dramatic 250-foot sea cave where the tide surges through a narrow chasm with thunderous force — you'll hear it before you see it. Nearby, Devil's Bridge is a natural rock arch framing the ocean. Check the tide before approaching and stay well back from the unfenced cliff edges.
One of Ireland's best-preserved WWII navigational markers, this restored sign spells out 'ÉIRE' in white-painted stones set into the grass just past the tower. During the war, these signs told Allied pilots they were flying over neutral Irish airspace. A hauntingly photogenic spot.
In May 2016, scenes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi were shot here, with a full-scale Millennium Falcon built on the clifftop. The lunar-like terrain around Hell's Hole doubled as the planet Ahch-To. Mark Hamill famously dropped into Farren's Bar for a pint — Ireland's most northerly pub, about 4km south.
Malin Head sits within a dark sky reserve with minimal light pollution, making it one of Ireland's best locations to catch the aurora borealis. Best chances are September to March on clear nights with high solar activity. Even without the lights, the stargazing here is exceptional.
To the east of Banba's Crown, this internationally significant raised beach system shows four stages of post-glacial sea-level change, with ancient shorelines up to 80 feet above today's sea. A favourite spot for hunting semi-precious stones like agate, jasper, and cornelian.
