Kerry County Museum packs 7,000 years of the kingdom into a modern gallery block in the middle of Tralee — and its centrepiece, the Medieval Experience, lets you walk the streets of the town as they were in 1450 AD.
A life-size, walk-through reconstruction of Tralee's streets in 1450 AD, complete with the sights, sounds and robust smells of a bustling community. Allow about 40 minutes on the ground floor; children can dress up in medieval costume and get put in the stocks.
The hall explains how archaeologists actually work, from spade work to laboratory analysis, alongside medieval finds dug up at the site of Tralee's Dominican Priory. Highlights include fragments of a knight's tomb, a medieval mason's mark and evidence of a 500-year-old murder.
A hands-on workshop in the Archaeology Hall for ages 7-12: high-vis vests, hard hats, kneeling pads, trowels and brushes, replica Viking skeletons and grave goods, a 1,000-year-old rotten tooth and a real-life medieval murder mystery to puzzle over.
Visits are usually self-guided, but with advance notice the museum can provide a guided tour for groups of ten or more. Primary and secondary schools can book themed activity visits; advance booking is essential.
The museum occupies Ashe Memorial Hall on Denny Street, sharing the building with the Tralee Tourist Information Office — useful for local maps and advice before or after your visit.
