Purpose-built in the 13th century by William Marshal, Hook Lighthouse is the world's oldest intact operational lighthouse, still flashing over the seas off the tip of the Hook Peninsula.
Tours run seven days a week and are the only way inside. A guide leads you up the 115 worn spiral steps through thick-walled chambers, past life-size holograms of St Dubhán and William Marshal, to the balcony. Allow about 45 minutes for the tour, up to two hours on site.
The former keepers' houses hold a gift shop, maritime exhibits and art displays. Art workshops are currently suspended, but the resident artist works on site daily and her pieces are for sale.
The black-railed balcony gives a 360-degree sweep over Wexford, Waterford and the Celtic Sea, with the Saltee Islands and Leinster Mountains clear on good days. Dolphins, seals and — in winter — whales pass below.
An award-winning café in the former Principal Keeper's cottage and conservatory, with outdoor seating for over 120 and one of the best views on the peninsula. Everything is made with local Wexford suppliers.
Paths circle the tower and the surrounding headland; dogs are welcome on a lead. Between November and February the waters off Hook Peninsula draw humpback, fin and minke whales, plus dolphins, porpoise and seals.
Pre-bookable specials include Sunrise and Sunset tours, a Fish & Chip Supper tour and a Seafood Banquet tour with costumed characters along the way. Events run all year, from Easter treasure hunts to the Harvest Moon Celebration.
