About

A steep, river-cut glen of mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland in the Stacks Mountains, with three waymarked looped trails, picnic tables and free entry — about 12km from Tralee.

Things to Do

Walk the three looped trails

Three waymarked loops start from the car park: the Glanageenty Loop (4km, about 1h 20m, strenuous), Lenihan's Loop (5km, about 2h, strenuous) and the Bernard Brothers Loop (9km, about 3h, strenuous). The glen is steep, so expect challenging gradients — sturdy footwear is advisable.

Follow the Glanageenty river

The riparian zone along the river is the prettiest part of the wood and forms a wildlife corridor linking to the Knockatarriv and Doolaig bogs. In summer the riverside offers a cool reprieve from the heat.

Picnic in the forest

Seats and picnic tables are dotted around the woods at opportune points, many with views, so you can catch your breath and take in the scenery mid-walk.

Step back in history

The woods served as a place of refuge during both the Desmond Rebellion and the Irish Civil War, and archaeological features are marked on site.

Plan Your Visit

  • Hours: Open all year round, 24 hours — an open forest site with no gates.

  • Parking: Free car park at the trailhead, with generous space for visitors.
  • Food: No café or shop on site — bring your own food and water. Nearest options in Castleisland (9km) and Tralee (12km); Crag Cave is a nearby pit stop.
