About

Discovered in 1983, this million-year-old limestone cave system near Castleisland is Ireland's longest show cave — where underground chambers bear names from Tolkien's Middle Earth and thousands of calcite straws shimmer in the Crystal Gallery.

Things to Do

Self-Guided Cave Tour

Walk 350 metres through an almost 4km-long fossil cave system on a self-guided tour lasting about 30 minutes. See stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone in dramatically lit chambers. Highlights include The Crystal Gallery — filled with thousands of pure calcite straws — and The Cathedral with its candlestick-shaped stalagmites under a domed ceiling. Chambers are named after Tolkien's Middle Earth: Helms Deep, the Forest of Fangorn, Minas Tirith, and the Hall of Moria.
