About

A wild 5km clifftop loop on Ireland's remote Mullet Peninsula, where sheep graze beside Atlantic sea arches and the only sounds are seabirds and waves. Often called "the edge of the world."

Things to Do

The Loop Walk

A well-waymarked 5km circuit (1.5–2 hours) following an old earth bank around Erris Head. Grassy paths, a boardwalk over boggy sections, stiles, and a footbridge. The ascent is gentle (~70m) and the going is easy, though waterproof boots are strongly recommended — the ground is often soft and wet.

Clifftop Viewpoint & Sea Arches

At the northernmost tip, a railed viewing area overlooks Illandavuck Island, Pigeon Rock, and dramatic sea arches carved into the red sandstone cliffs. On clear days you can see Eagle Island lighthouse, the Stags of Broadhaven, and Benwee Head — whose cliffs are higher than the Cliffs of Moher.

WWII Coast Watch Station & EIRE Sign

Near the highest point of the loop sits a dilapidated concrete lookout post — No. 62 of 82 wartime watch stations along the Irish coast. Just below it, white stones spell out 'ÉIRE', part of a neutrality-era signalling system designed to alert Allied and German aircraft. A meteorological pillar stands nearby.

Wildlife Watching

Erris Head is a Special Area of Conservation. Look for bottlenose dolphins, porpoises, and seals in the water; Irish hares boxing in the grassland; and nesting fulmars, choughs, gannets, and guillemots on the cliffs. Bring binoculars if you can.

Danish Cellar & Kayaking

The car park overlooks the Danish Cellar, a secluded inlet named after the Tuatha Dé Danann. Steep steps lead down to the cove. An adventure-sports operator sometimes runs kayaking and coasteering sessions here — a striking way to see the cliffs from below.
