About

A dramatic Wild Atlantic Way discovery point where an ancient promontory fort meets a natural blowhole, framed by a striking modern sculpture dedicated to those lost at sea.

Things to Do

The Blowhole & Sculpture

The centrepiece is a natural blowhole encircled by a sculpture created by American artist Travis Price in 2002. When Atlantic swells crash against the cliffs, seawater is forced up through the vertical shaft — most spectacular at high tide or in stormy conditions. The sculpture features a narrow corridor between high stone walls topped with iron bars, framing the blowhole safely.

The Promontory Fort

Dún na mBó ('Fort of the Cow') sits on the site of an ancient circular promontory fort likely dating to the Iron Age. The headland was naturally defended by vertical cliffs on its seaward sides, with ramparts protecting the landward approach. An information board at the site explains its history.

Clifftop Views

From the cliffs you get uninterrupted Atlantic panoramas. On clear days Eagle Island Lighthouse is visible offshore. Pass through the pedestrian gate into the adjacent field to walk the clifftops — but keep well back from unfenced edges.

Tír Sáile Sculpture Trail

The blowhole sculpture is part of the Tír Sáile (North Mayo Sculpture Trail), Ireland's largest public arts trail. Other nearby installations include 'The Thin Places' at Annagh Head (3 km south) and 'Deirbhile's Twist' at Fallmore.
