An 11km sweep of powdery white sand backed by towering dunes — Curracloe is one of Ireland's finest Blue Flag beaches, famous as Spielberg's stand-in for Omaha Beach in *Saving Private Ryan*.
Curracloe's wide, gently shelving sands make it one of the safest bathing beaches in Ireland. The water is clean and the soft sand extends far into the shallows. Swim between the red-and-yellow flags when lifeguards are on duty (summer months at White Gap).
The Surf Shack at White Gap offers lessons for all levels (from €40), plus board and wetsuit rental (from €10). Gentle, consistent waves make this an ideal beginner's break. They also run SUP tasters (from €15), sandboarding, and summer camps for kids.
This easy 6.8km loop through Raven Nature Reserve threads through mature pine forest, dunes, and coastline. Look for red squirrels, grey seals offshore, and — in winter — thousands of Greenland White-fronted Geese. The compacted stone trail is largely flat; allow about 1hr 30min.
Walk the entire length from Ballinesker in the north, past White Gap, to Culletons Gap at the southern end. The beach is so vast it rarely feels crowded, even in high summer. Stop to explore the grass-covered dunes and collect seashells along the way.
Ballinesker Beach at the northern end was transformed into Omaha Beach for two months in 1997 for the D-Day landing scenes in *Saving Private Ryan*. Around 1,500 crew and actors — including Irish Army reservists as extras — recreated the Normandy invasion here. Scenes from the film *Brooklyn* (starring Saoirse Ronan) were also shot on this stretch.
