A roofless Gothic Revival manor house from 1818, hidden down a farm track at the start of Connemara's spectacular Sky Road — complete with mock standing stones, ivy-clad walls, and sweeping views over Clifden Bay.
Park at the small gravel patch by the stone gateway arch and follow the 1 km winding dirt track downhill through horse and sheep pastures. The walk takes about 15 minutes each way and offers lovely views of the bay and surrounding countryside.
The roofless shell of Clifden Castle still impresses with pointed-arch windows, round turrets, and castellated battlements. Walk around the back for the most photogenic view — thick ivy blankets the walls there. Enter the interior at your own risk; the floors are uneven and often flooded after rain.
Along the approach path you'll pass several standing stones. Don't be fooled — these aren't prehistoric. John D'Arcy had them erected in the 19th century as landscape ornaments in honour of his children.
Clifden Castle sits right at the start of the famous Sky Road, a 16 km scenic loop with jaw-dropping Atlantic views. It's the perfect add-on — visit the castle ruins then continue west for one of Ireland's most celebrated coastal drives.
