A windswept blanket bog outside Clifden where two transatlantic firsts happened within a few hundred metres: Marconi's 1907 commercial radio station, and Alcock & Brown's crash-landing after the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic in 1919.
A signed, easy 4.5-5 km loop (about 1 hour 45 minutes, 30 m of ascent) on roadway, gravel tracks and short boardwalk sections, waymarked with purple arrows on white. It starts at the car park beside the R341 and passes the key historic points before returning across the bog.
The scattered concrete foundations of the world's first permanent transatlantic wireless station - condenser house, power station, social club and eight mast bases - survive where it burned during the War of Independence. The station relayed the first news of the Titanic disaster to Europe in 1912.
A cairn and information panels mark where John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown ended their 16-hour Vickers Vimy flight from Newfoundland on 15 June 1919 - the first non-stop transatlantic crossing. A wing-shaped memorial stands nearby on the Errislannan Peninsula.
