On the wild north Mayo cliffs, Céide Fields is the world's oldest known stone-walled field system — nearly 6,000-year-old farmland buried beneath a blanket bog, explored via an award-winning cliff-top visitor centre.
Self-guide through two floors of exhibits starting at the Scots Pine tree: replica Neolithic clothing, a 3D hologram, a quernstone for grinding grain, animal skins and Seamus Heaney reading his poem 'Belderg'. Don't miss the six-minute 360° immersive theatre, which plays automatically every ten minutes.
Test your head for heights on the platform 110 metres above the ocean, with views over the Atlantic and some of Ireland's most dramatic rock formations. In bad weather, watch the seascape from the glass rooftop instead.
A 0.7 km boardwalk loops the ancient fields, reachable by guided tour, self-guided walk or audio tour (QR code at reception). Look for hares, frogs, lizards and skylarks among mosses, heathers, bog cotton and orchids that change with the seasons.
Guides tell the story of the globe's most extensive Stone Age monument. On the tour you can probe the bog to locate a Neolithic stone wall two metres beneath your feet — new discoveries are still being made.
