Award-winning Celtic gardens set within 11 acres of wildflower meadows and native woodland — a magical journey through the seasons, mythology, and the landscape of the West of Ireland.
The nature trail winds through hazel and ash woodland, restored wildflower meadows, and young native oak plantations. Along the way you'll discover the ancient ring fort (fairy fort), a thatched roundhouse, a crannóg on the lake, and Ireland's largest calendar sundial.
Kids pick up an Earth Quest guide and solve science-based challenges around the gardens: a water-engineering play area, pedal-power generator, geodesic camera obscura, and weather station. Younger children can follow the Nature Detectives trail or hunt for the hidden Fairy Village.
Climb the wooden whale slide, cross the Da Vinci Bridge, run through willow tunnels, and swing on rope ladders and basketwork swings. There are stepping logs, a see-saw, a bog-wood throne, and whispering pipes in the stone chamber.
Freshly prepared lunches and teas using local produce, with salads and herbs straight from the gardens. Soups, quiches, salads, Mediterranean-style mezze platters, wraps, and home-baked scones and cakes. Light-filled dining room overlooking the gardens, plus al fresco patio seating. Walk the Sun Trail through four gardens representing the Celtic fire festivals: Samhain (winter), Imbolc (spring), Bealtaine (summer), and Lughnasa (harvest). Designed by Chelsea Gold-medal winner Mary Reynolds, each garden is a distinct world of sculpture, planting, and symbolism — from the sleeping earth-woman pool to the fire circle with its bog-oak throne.
