Connemara's best-preserved late-medieval tower house, built by the O'Flaherty clan on a rocky outcrop above the Drimneen River — a rare surviving example of a Gaelic chieftain's stronghold with an unusual double-baun defence system.
Climb the narrow, deliberately uneven spiral staircase — designed to trip invaders — through all four accessible floors. See the ground-floor storage rooms, guard chamber, private apartments, and the gallery overlooking the main hall. Look for the murder hole above the entrance and the secret vaulted chamber accessed through the garderobe floor.
Follow the path from the car park along the Drimneen River under a canopy of ash, hazel and hawthorn. Cross the natural rock bridge to the gatehouse — the scenic approach is one of the highlights, with the castle revealing itself dramatically above the water.
Explore the ruined 16th-century banqueting hall with its carved stone grape-and-vine window reliefs — evidence the O'Flahertys imported wine. Walk the perimeter of the double bawn, a rare two-layer walled enclosure with five flanking towers, and inspect the circular watchtower with its finely corbelled stone dome.
