A small stone bridge on the N59 near Oughterard that earned screen fame in John Ford's 1952 classic The Quiet Man — the spot where John Wayne's Sean Thornton stops to look across the Connemara landscape. It is a free, easy roadside stop on the drive between Galway and Clifden.
About 9km towards Clifden, Peacockes Hotel at Maam Cross has a free-to-enter replica of the film cottage. Further afield, the Quiet Man Museum in Cong, Co. Mayo, recreates White O'Morn cottage and runs award-winning film-location walking tours daily at noon (open 10am–4pm, roughly April–September).
Walk the bridge where Sean Thornton pauses in The Quiet Man while hearing his mother's voice describe his ancestral home. A commemorative plaque of John Wayne stands on the side of the bridge, which is largely unchanged since the 1950s. Please don't remove stones as souvenirs — locals say the bridge has needed repairs because of it.
A small display board at the layby gives background on John Wayne and the film, handy for visitors who haven't seen the movie. It's a five-minute stop rather than a full day out.
The bridge sits about 100 metres off the main road beside the river, with open views over the Connemara landscape. It's a peaceful spot for a quick rest, photo, or picnic on a road trip.
