A 12th-century Cistercian monastery that survived invasions, Cromwell's garrison and conversion into barracks, Boyle Abbey now stands as one of the best-preserved early monastic ruins in Connacht, with a restored gatehouse visitor centre in Boyle town.
Walk the cloister garden and explore the roofless abbey church, where the original nave, arches and wall passages survive. The average visit takes about an hour, and guides offer a 30-minute tour covering the abbey's turbulent history.
The arches here are a rare transitional style, built as Romanesque gave way to Gothic — a movement mostly found west of the Shannon, with fine work attributed to the Ballintubber Master.
Two possible Sheela-na-gig figures are set into the church — one by the entrance, another defaced further along the nave. Look too for carved capitals such as the pair of cockerels, and try the Whispering Arch.
The abbey is photogenic from the grounds and car park, with the nave walls rising clear of the trees. Cromwellian troops occupied the site in 1659 and it later held a military garrison, yet the structure remains impressively intact.
The restored 16th/17th-century gatehouse holds an interpretive centre with information panels and a model of the abbey, guest house, abbot's house and graveyard. Note the steep, uneven stairs to the exhibition room.
A stone's throw from the church is Abbeytown Bridge, one of Ireland's oldest surviving stone bridges. In town, King House (an early Georgian mansion) and Lough Key Forest Park are close by.
