A 160-acre lakeside Georgian estate on Lough Ennell, where a fully restored 1740s Palladian villa, a Victorian walled garden and Ireland's largest folly sit among woodlands and parkland just outside Mullingar.
A rare Palladian hunting lodge designed by Richard Cassels and dating to 1740, with a bow-fronted facade, Diocletian windows, original Irish oak floors and some of the finest surviving Rococo plasterwork in Ireland. Visit is self-guided with directional signage.
The Jealous Wall is Ireland's largest folly, a 20m sham ruin built in 1760 by the 1st Earl of Belvedere to block the view of his brother's bigger house. Also seek out Thomas Wright's Octagonal Gazebo and the Gothic Arch on the estate.
A narrow 19th-century pleasure garden with a Victorian glasshouse, rare and exotic plants, old roses, hydrangeas and the heritage Belvedere apple, plus 12 acres of arboretum beyond with specimen trees.
Around 10km of woodland and lakeside paths along Lough Ennell, passing an old icehouse, a yew reputed to be 800 years old and a wooden carving of King Malachy, with swans, red squirrels and otters to spot.
Play areas, picnic benches at the lakeshore, free audio guides in English, German, French and Spanish, and an enclosed Dog Chill-Out Zone near the Visitor Centre. Picnics are welcome but no barbecues or fires.
The estate hosts a busy calendar including the Food & Apple Festival, a Halloween Trail with a Samhain circus spectacle and the Garden Festival. A season ticket gives unlimited visits for a full year.
