A quiet forest trailhead on the lower slopes of the Ballyhoura Mountains, offering two well-waymarked loop walks through Coillte forestry with sweeping views across the Golden Vale towards Limerick and the Shannon.
The main 10 km loop (2.5–3 hrs, moderate). Follows forest roads and tracks up the shoulder of Knockduv Mountain, with views over the Golden Vale, Limerick City, and the River Shannon on clear days. Waymarked with purple arrows. Total ascent about 200 m.
A shorter 5 km option (1–1.5 hrs, moderate) sharing the first section with the Ballinaboola Loop before splitting off. A good choice for families or those wanting a quicker outing. Waymarked in green.
A section of this 89 km National Waymarked Way passes through Ballinaboola Woods. Look for yellow arrows joining and leaving the loop trails — a taste of multi-day walking without the commitment.
The loops criss-cross Ballyhoura's 98 km mountain bike trail network. You'll likely spot riders on the descents. Bike hire is available from Trailriders at the main Ardpatrick trailhead.
Hen harriers are known to forage and patrol the area. The forest is part of a 6,000-hectare Coillte block, home to varied birdlife. Early mornings offer the best chance of sightings.
After your walk, drive to nearby Ardpatrick village (7.5 km) and climb the steep trail to the ancient monastery ruins, founded — according to local tradition — by Saint Patrick. Iron Age earthworks crown the summit.
