A 500-acre Wicklow estate where a fully accessible boardwalk lifts you 23 m into the treetops, above the birthplace of Charles Stewart Parnell.
Ireland's first fully accessible treetop walk weaves out over the Avonmore River valley and through the arboretum, at one point over 23 m above the forest floor. It ends at the 38 m Viewing Tower, with panoramic views over Wicklow.
Descend from the tower on the 90 m spiral slide for €2 per go, payable at the top, or take the gentle boardwalk down past Ireland's longest Emil's Marble Run. The slide is weather-dependent and does not run when it is wet.
Costumed guides lead a 45-minute living-history tour of the restored Georgian rooms where Parnell was born and raised. Tours run daily, are fully accessible on the ground floor, and are capped at 12 people, so pre-booking is advised.
Marked routes range from the easy, buggy-friendly Below the Trees loop to the challenging River Walk, plus a Railway Walk to Rathdrum and a family cycle trail. The Cairn Walk passes the old Great Tree Experiment plots and giant redwoods.
The restored red-brick walled garden holds a state-of-the-art children's play area, a sensory garden in the old laundry garden, benches and a water refill station. The Seed Café deck overlooks the playground.
A bright café in the visitor centre serving seasonally changing food from locally sourced Wicklow ingredients, from soups and salads to sandwiches and homemade treats, with outdoor terrace seating.
Over 100 tree species grow here, including champion trees and an arboretum planted from Samuel Hayes's time. Keep watch for deer, red squirrels, pine marten and seven of Ireland's nine bat species.
