Ireland's last working coal mine, preserved as an immersive underground tour led by the very miners who once worked its narrow seams — a raw, first-hand encounter with 400 years of mining heritage in the Arigna Valley.
The headline experience: a 45-minute guided descent into the mine with a former miner. You'll don a helmet and hygiene cap, feel the constant 10°C chill, and see the cramped coal seams where men once worked on their sides. Lighting and sound effects bring the darkness to life. Adult €15, child (5–18) €8, family tickets available.
Free to enter and no booking required. Trace 400 years of mining history through photographs, documents, tools and machinery. Highlights include footage of miners at work filmed just weeks before the mines closed in 1990, and the original control panel from the Lough Allen Power Station.
The 60-seat on-site café serves breakfast (full Irish €12.50), small bites (soup €6, toasties €5), and lunch (burgers, BLTs, rotating mains all €13). Open 10am–4pm daily. Kids' options available.

The long-distance Miners Way walking trail passes right through the Arigna Mining Experience site, offering the chance to combine the indoor visit with a walk through the surrounding countryside and up-close views of the wind turbines.
