A striking white lighthouse on the wild western tip of Bere Island, reached by a rugged loop walk with panoramic views over Bantry Bay, the Beara Peninsula, and the Atlantic. No admission — just a ferry ride and a rewarding hike.
The 7.5–11km loop from the West End pier takes 4–5 hours on tracks, lanes, and old military paths. Follow purple waymarkers through a gradual climb to 248m, then steep sections near the lighthouse. The area around the lighthouse is a perfect picnic spot with views west to Dursey Island and south to the Mizen Peninsula.
Ardnakinna is a working lighthouse — you cannot go inside. The 20-metre white tower stands on the cliff edge, its LED light (installed 2014) flashing twice every ten seconds in white and red. The best views are from the coastal path approaching from the north, where you can also watch fishing boats entering Castletownbere, Ireland's largest whitefish port.
The track follows an old military route. Near the highest point you can detour to see a former British battery. The entire walk delivers 360º panoramas: north to the Slieve Miskish and Caha Mountains, east across Berehaven Sound, and south over Sheep's Head.
