Ireland's most productive 19th-century copper mine, now a haunting post-industrial landscape of engine houses and shafts on the wild Beara Peninsula, explored via a waymarked trail from the excellent village museum.
Housed in the restored 1845 Cornish Methodist chapel, this museum tells the mining story through interactive displays, original cost books, a working model of the unique Man Engine lift, and geological exhibits. Start here — the trail map and context make the hillside ruins come alive.
A waymarked network of loops (1.5km to 11km) linking six of the seven mine sites. The 7km green North Engine Loop is the standout: follow the coast past Ballydonegan Beach, climb to the Mountain Mine engine house, and loop back through the village. Allow 2–3 hours. Pick up the map at the museum.
The most productive mine in Allihies, worked continuously from 1813 to 1882 and reaching 421m deep (280m below sea level). The 1862 Man Engine House is the only one of its kind in Ireland — a rare surviving example of the lift system that carried miners underground. Look for the gaping open-cast scars beside it.
A short walk below the village, this unusual quartz-sand beach was formed from particles washed down from the mine dressing floors. Sheltered enough for swimming on calm summer days, with a campsite alongside. The sand is coarser than a natural beach and doesn't stick to your feet.
