About
Wicklow's Historic Gaol has watched over the town for more than three centuries, its stone walls holding the stories of the 1798 Rebellion, the Famine and the fight for independence. It is currently closed for renovation, with a reopening and renewed exhibitions promised soon.

Audio-visual journey through two centuries
A self-guided audio-visual route traces the 1798 Rebellion, the transportation era, the Famine Years and the War of Independence, using holographic displays, life-size mannequins, a replica prison ship and interpretative panels. Free audio guides are included with admission.
Family discovery trails
Purpose-made family discovery trails give children a way into the gaol's darker history without losing the fun of exploring the cells and corridors.
Ghost tours by candlelight
For a different night out, the gaol runs after-dark night tours by candlelight where visitors mingle with the resident ghosts. Booking ahead is advisable.
Paranormal investigations
The brave and curious can book a night-time paranormal investigation inside one of Ireland's most haunted buildings.
Gates of Hell virtual reality tour
A fully immersive VR experience transports visitors back to the 1700s, into a grim 3D world of corruption, rebellion and dark dungeons, featuring notorious prisoners and a ghost or two.
The Governor's Table Café and gift shop
On-site food and a gift shop round off a visit; heritage talks, venue hire and community events also run at the gaol.
Plan Your Visit
- Hours: Normally open seven days a week, 10.30am-4.30pm from 1 February to 30 November, and 11am-3.30pm from 1 December to 31 January. The gaol is currently closed for maintenance and renovation and is due to reopen, so check before travelling.
- Food: The Governor's Table Café on site serves food and drink, alongside the gift shop. A Jailer's Rest Café was previously operated at the gaol.
