A west-facing curve of sand on Ballinskelligs Bay, right at the heart of the seafront village of Waterville on the Ring of Kerry — a Green Coast Award beach famous for its sunsets, promenade and statues.
A paved, level promenade runs the length of the beach, linking the village high street towards Inny Strand and the golf links. It is wheelchair-friendly and passes the surviving 1820s Coast Guard cottages midway. On clear days you can see the Skelligs and the Kerry Cliffs across the bay.
Chaplin holidayed here every summer from 1959 for over a decade; his bronze statue stands on the promenade, close to the Sea Synergy centre. A second bronze honours GAA manager Mick O'Dwyer. Each late August the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival spills onto the promenade.
The sand really opens up as the tide drops, leaving a wide, gently shelving strand great for walking, paddling and stone-stacking. It is a west-facing beach, so time a visit for the evening sunset over the Atlantic. A 2026 Green Coast Award site for water quality.
Twelve marked points start at Butler's Monument and trace Waterville's story: the transatlantic cable station that once made it one of the world's largest, St Michael's Church, the longitude stone and the old cable offices.
Sea Synergy Marine Awareness Centre on the seafront runs snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding. Grey seals, dolphins and even basking sharks are seen in the bay. Note there are no lifeguards — check tides and conditions before swimming.
Waterville sits inside the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve, so after sunset the beach and promenade offer some of the darkest, star-filled skies in the northern hemisphere.
