Birthplace of President John F. Kennedy's great-grandfather Patrick Kennedy, still farmed by his descendants and now a state-of-the-art visitor centre telling five generations of the Kennedy story.
A key feature of the Homestead recreates President Kennedy's June 1963 visit to Dunganstown, when he had tea with his Irish cousins. Visitors can relive the sounds and scenes of that day; Kennedy called his Irish trip 'the best four days of my life'.
Guided tours combine audio-visuals, a photographic exhibition and a historical interpretative display that follows the family from famine emigrants to US President, Ambassador, Attorney General and Senator.
The Homestead is still farmed by Kennedy descendants, and the courtyard around the original buildings gives a sense of the small farm Patrick Kennedy left behind.
The curators drew on the Kennedy Library archive in Boston to build an interpretative exhibit tracing Patrick Kennedy's 1848 departure and the family's rise through the 20th century. A collection of rare Kennedy memorabilia, audio-visual displays and archive film footage fills the centre.
