The gardens at The Dunloe pack a tour of the world's trees into a single hour-long stroll, wrapped around the shell of MacThomas' medieval keep with the Ring of Kerry mountains behind. The hotel and grounds are currently closed for renovation.
The grounds are laid out so you can 'walk around the world in an hour': Chilean firs, Australian gums, South African lilies, New Zealand cabbage trees and cherries, Japanese maples, North American dogwoods, South American fuchsias and a Killarney strawberry tree. Camellias, magnolias, roses and rhododendrons flourish in the sheltered grounds, along with rarities such as the aromatic-leaved 'Headache' tree.
The gardens surround the shell of MacThomas' medieval keep, in a dramatic setting looking towards the mountains girdled by the Ring of Kerry.
Explore at your own pace with a leisurely stroll, or join a guided tour, available on request.
Bicycle hire is available to explore the local countryside, suitable for all ages and equipped with repair kits and helmets. Long-range e-bikes are also offered for going further afield.
