A 15th-century tower house perched on an inlet of Lough Leane in Killarney National Park — the last place in Munster to hold out against Cromwell, steeped in O'Donoghue legend.
The only way inside is a 40-minute guided tour (max 15 people, first-come first-served). You'll climb the original worn spiral staircase through the guard room, parlour with period furnishings, and up to the Great Hall with its hand-cut timber roof. The rooftop reveals cannons, arrow slits, and sweeping lake-and-mountain views.
A 3–5 km easy loop starting from the castle car park. The trail skirts the lakeshore past Bronze Age copper mines (dating to 2400 BC), then leads to Governor's Rock and Library Point — two stunning lookouts over Lough Leane and Innisfallen Island. Allow 1–2 hours.
Boats depart from the pier directly behind the castle. Ross Castle Boat Tours offer trips to Innisfallen Island (ancient monastic ruins), the Meeting of the Waters, and one-way journeys through the three lakes to the Gap of Dunloe or Muckross House.
Before your tour, explore the interpretive exhibition in the courtyard with information panels and a model of the tower house. The grounds and courtyard are free to enter year-round, even when the castle interior is closed for winter.
A 5 km return walk from the castle to a limestone outcrop with spectacular views of Innisfallen Island and its 12th-century monastery ruins. Combine with the Copper Mines loop for a varied half-day walk. Keep an eye out for red deer swimming the channel.
