A short clifftop promenade above Tramore Bay, gifted to the townspeople by Lord Doneraile and lined with maritime history — from a Sea Horse shipwreck memorial to an old coastguard cannon on the cliff.
An easy 1 km path (listed at about 15 minutes) on tarmac and gravel, laid out in the early 19th century as Lord Doneraile's private promenade. It has spectacular views of Tramore Bay, the Sandhills and Brownstown Head, with plenty of spots to sit.
Along the route is a monument to the British Sea Horse, wrecked in Tramore Bay in January 1816 with the loss of over 360 lives — the disaster that prompted the Beacon Towers. Halfway along, an old coast guard cannon sits on a cliff outcrop overlooking the bay.
The walk passes the restored 1874 coastguard station, now a cultural centre. Its café serves teas and coffees, cakes, soups and freshly prepared light lunches in a 40-seat room, or from a takeaway window for the seafront gardens.
The clifftop seafront gardens have uninterrupted views of the bay and are a fine picnic spot. Entry to the exhibitions in the Café Gallery and Upstairs Gallery, and to the Coastguard Creatives Craft Shop of locally made art and crafts, is free.
Past the coastguard station the path leaves town and follows the Cliff Road towards Newtown Cove and the Guillamene, popular local swimming spots — a good option if you want a longer coastal walk.
