A free, easy clifftop promenade in Tramore with sweeping views over Tramore Bay, gifted to the town by Lord Doneraile and rich in shipwreck history.
A 5 km, easy, mostly tarmac trail (about 1.5 hours) waymarked with Slí na Sláinte arrows. It hugs the cliffs above Tramore Bay with panoramic views of the beach, sand dunes, Backstrand and Brownstown Head, with plenty of benches and picnic spots en route. The trailhead is on Church Road; you can also start from The Prom.
Mid-walk you pass a monument to the sinking of the British Sea Horse in January 1816, in which over 360 lives were lost. An old coastguard cannon sits on a cliff outcrop, and across the bay the 1821 Beacon Towers and the Metalman, built as navigational aids after the tragedy, are visible.
The walk passes the restored 1874 coastguard station, now a cultural centre with free art exhibitions, a craft shop and a clifftop café. Inside the café you can get teas, coffees, cakes, soups and light lunches, with gluten-free options and a takeaway window.
The centre's seafront gardens have uninterrupted views of Tramore Bay and are a lovely spot for a coffee break; there is also an outdoor storytelling area. Dogs are welcome in the gardens on leads.
Feeling energetic, keep going along Cliff Road past the centre in the direction of Newtown Cove and the Guillamene swimming cove for a longer coastal outing.
