A dramatic ruined fortress crowning a 46m limestone outcrop above the Laois countryside — free, unstaffed, and open year-round, with some of the best panoramic views in Ireland's Ancient East.
Wander through 800 years of history: climb past the isolated barbican gate, through the inner barbican's defensive ditches, into the Lower Ward and up to the Great Hall on the summit. Look for murder holes, the portcullis slot, and the remains of the twin-towered gatehouse. An information panel at the base shows a reconstruction of the castle in its prime.
From the summit, soak in uninterrupted 360° views across miles of open farmland to the Slieve Bloom Mountains. The Rock rises 46 metres above the plain — it's easy to see why this spot has been fought over since the 9th century. Sunrise and sunset are particularly spectacular for photography.
A short gravel path loops around the site in 15–20 minutes, passing through the old defensive walls with plenty of alcoves, windows and hidden spots to explore. It's not a long hike, but the terrain is uneven with steep drops — sturdy footwear is essential.

The Rock of Dunamase starred as 'Ballycarbery Castle' in the 2010 rom-com Leap Year (with Amy Adams), heavily enhanced with CGI. Parts of the classic Darby O'Gill and the Little People were also filmed here.
