About

A free-to-visit, peaceful loop around a small woodland lake near Dunleer, Co. Louth, loved by families, dog walkers and birdwatchers.

Things to Do

Circular lakeside walk

An easy loop of roughly 1 km (0.6-1 mile) on gravel paths around the lake takes 20-30 minutes at a gentle pace. It is level and clearly marked, with a short spur through the surrounding woodland. Wear sturdy shoes - paths can be uneven and muddy after rain.

Birdwatching and wildlife

The lake is a small haven for waterbirds - expect mallard, teal, moorhen, coot and swans - while the beech and oak woodland holds song thrush, blackbird, robin, chiffchaff and more. Bring binoculars and go early or at dusk.

Family picnic by the lake

Kids love stopping to watch the ducks and swans from the water's edge. There is no cafe on site, so pack a picnic and pick one of the grassy spots around the lake.

Woodland trails

Beyond the lake, the loop dips into mature woodland that was once part of a private estate, with fine beech and oak, willow stands around the water and a closed ivy carpeted canopy. It is particularly colourful in autumn.

Dog walking

The quiet loop is a popular local dog walk. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead, and there may be livestock in the neighbouring fields.
