An award-winning 100-acre estate in Raphoe, Co. Donegal, featuring Ireland's longest miniature-gauge railway, beautifully restored gardens, a hedge maze, sculptures, and woodland walks — a superb family day out.
Ireland's longest miniature-gauge railway (15-inch, 4.5km of track) winds through woodlands, around the lake, past the Castle Folly and the Long Sleeper sculpture. Trips last about 15 minutes. The 'Duchess of Difflin' steam engine runs on the last Sunday of each month (Steam Sunday); diesel engines run every day the park is open. Book tickets at the gate, Buffers, or the ice-cream truck — no pre-booking needed.
The Lower Gardens feature 50,000 native trees, Lake Difflin, a castle folly, boardwalks, the Fairy Tree, and wetland areas. The Upper Gardens — 50 acres of formal gardens, ponds, a large lake with Nymphaeum, walled gardens, glasshouses, sculptures, and wildflower meadows — are open June through August, 12–4pm, included in your entry.
A hedge maze with 880 plants and 1km of pathway leading to a 10-metre-tall brick tower at the centre. Designed by Jennifer Fisher, it's fun for all ages. If you get stuck, use the free Oakfield Park app's map to navigate your way out.
A collection of sculptures in wood, stone, and metal dotted throughout the gardens. Highlights include 'The Longsleeper' by Lockie Morris (oak and steel), 'Reading Chaucer' by Philip Jackson, 'Deer' by Rupert Till, and chainsaw carvings by local artist Gintas Poderys. Spot them on foot or from the train.
A natural-play playground with wooden equipment, slides, a tunnel, and a nature dome with crafts and live exhibits. Conveniently located next to Buffers Restaurant so you can enjoy a coffee while keeping an eye on the children.
Kilometres of signed walking paths through native woodland, past sculptures, over wetlands, and to scenic viewpoints. Choose Bishop's Walk, Boot Hill, or follow the 2.5km red route. Weekend and bank holiday guided tours of the Upper Gardens depart at 2pm and 4pm from the welcome kiosk.
A fully licensed restaurant using produce from the estate's own walled garden. Offers light bites, hot dishes, sweet treats, speciality teas and coffees, and local craft beers. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Open every day the park is open; last orders 5:30pm.
