Riverside walk and White Bridge
A new White Bridge was installed in 2019, restoring access across the River Inny that had been lost since 1963. The river path is the scenic highlight of the wood.

About
Newcastle Wood is a 325-hectare Coillte forest on the banks of the River Inny, laid out with marked looped walks through what was once the 19th-century King-Harman estate of Newcastle Demesne. Woodland trails, a rebuilt "White Bridge" and easy riverside strolling make it a calm, free day out near Ballymahon.

Wildlife watching
The mixed oak, ash, beech, pine and spruce woodland holds fallow deer, mink and birds such as swans, mallard, wigeon, kingfisher and skylarks.
Short Loop (1.2 km)
Easy, brown-marked loop from the Inny Bridge car park; about 20 minutes through woodland flora and fauna, staying close to the car park if you need to cut it short.
Newcastle Wood Loop (3.7 km)
Green-marked, moderate, roughly one hour. Circles the forest and follows the river, giving both woodland and waterside scenery.
Perimeter Trail (5.6 km)
Red-marked, moderate, about 1.5 hours. Starts at the White Bridge and runs around the perimeter of the Center Parcs Longford Forest resort.
Accessible and family walking
Besides 14 km of trails there is a 400 m Access for All Walk and a 1 km wheelchair-accessible woodland pathway, plus plenty of picnic spots and paddling/canoeing access to the Inny.
Plan Your Visit
- Hours: Open 24 hours a day, every day; free public forest with no gate or closing time (Google listing shows all-day access).
- Parking: Small free car park and picnic area on the far side of Newcastle bridge, reached by a narrow side road off Ballymahon's main street (about 2 km). Google also lists a paid car park and free street parking. Spaces are limited, so arrive early.
- Food: No café on site; the nearest food and drink is in Ballymahon town centre. Visit Longford also suggests Glenview Lounge and the Corner House in Drumlish.
