In a Longford bog lies Europe's largest Iron Age road, built in 148 BC. An 18-metre stretch of the oak trackway sits preserved in a purpose-built hall, with free guided tours and easy walks across the surrounding peatland.
Access is by guided tour only (free, included with admission). You stand alongside an 18-metre section of the original oak road, carbon-dated to 148 BC and kept in a climate-controlled hall designed to preserve it. Last tour leaves at 17:00.
An audio-visual show, murals of Iron Age life, and displays of objects found in the bog — pottery, arrowheads and weapons — explain how the causeway was built and why it sank into the peat, preserving it for two millennia.
Easy looped walking trails cross the conserved Corlea Peat Bog, which is kept wet to protect the archaeology. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes to take in bog cotton, dragonflies and sphagnum moss around the artificial lakes.
There is a picnic area and plenty of outdoor spots around the centre, so bring your own drinks and snacks. Dogs on leads are welcome.
