A 13th-century Norman keep with Ireland's finest cylindrical tower — climb 101 spiral stone steps to a rooftop with sweeping views over Nenagh and the Silvermines.
The narrow, stone-cut spiral stair winds up through all four storeys of the keep. The entrance passage has low headroom — you will need to stoop — and the steps are steep and can be slippery when wet. Sturdy footwear helps.
From the limestone-floored roof, 30 metres up, you get a full 360° view over Nenagh town, the Silvermines Mountains, Lough Derg, and the surrounding Tipperary farmland. Late afternoon light is best for photographs.
Free 30–40 minute guided tours are available in English and Polish, led by local historians who bring the Butler dynasty, sieges, and the 1760 gunpowder-and-sparrows incident to life. Pre-booking is recommended, especially for groups of 15 or more.
A quiet, well-kept grassed area surrounds the base of the tower off O'Rahilly Street. It is an ideal spot for a picnic or to simply admire the keep's chessboard-rook silhouette against the sky.
Each of the four floors has panels covering the castle's construction, the Butler family, key historical events like the 1651 siege, and the modern OPW restoration. Original medieval fireplaces and walls up to 5 metres thick are visible throughout.
A five-minute walk away, housed in a 1840s gaol complex, this centre fills in the local history the castle tour may skim over. A great pairing to round out your visit.
