An atmospheric ruined Georgian mansion swallowed by forest on the shores of Lough Carra — a free, family-friendly spot for woodland walks, history, and lakeside picnics.
The ivy-clad shell of a grand 1792 mansion, burned during the Civil War in 1923. Its empty windows, colonnaded doorway, and the family motto 'Fortis Cadere Non Potest' are still visible. The house is locked and inaccessible inside, but the exterior is dramatic and free to explore.
A well-surfaced gravel loop of about 2–3 km through mixed woodland, waymarked with white finger posts (or red arrows). It leads past the ruined house, the old walled garden, and back to the car park. Easy grade, roughly 30–90 minutes depending on pace. Sturdy shoes recommended.
Look out for charming wooden carvings of native wildlife — foxes, owls, and other animals — dotted along the trails. A hit with children and great for keeping young walkers engaged.
A small playground near the car park and picnic tables make this an easy family outing. Cross the road from the car park for lovely views and shore access on Lough Carra — there's even a small sandy beach.
The estate's original walled garden, once designed to make Moore Hall self-sufficient, is undergoing conservation and restoration. You can still explore what remains and imagine its former scale.
