A 6th-century monastery clinging to a sheer Atlantic rock, reached by boat and 618 hand-cut stone steps — one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Republic of Ireland.
The ascent follows the original monastic stairway, rising 180 m (600 ft) from the landing pier to the stone enclosure on the summit. The steps are steep, uneven and have no edge protection — a demanding climb that rewards with one of the most dramatic monastic sites in Europe.
Inside the monastery enclosure, dry-stone beehive cells (clocháin), two oratories, a graveyard, and stone cross slabs survive remarkably intact after 1,400 years. OPW guides stationed at the monastery interpret the site and its history.
Little Skellig hosts the world's second-largest gannet colony (~70,000 birds). On Skellig Michael, Atlantic puffins nest on the upper slopes from late March to early August. Grey seals haul out on the rocks, and dolphins are sometimes seen on the crossing.
This waterfront visitor centre brings the Skellig story to dry land with exhibitions, a 14-minute film, life-size seabird models, lighthouse history, and a café-restaurant overlooking Portmagee. It also runs its own eco cruises and landing tours.
