Walk to the base of the falls
A well-maintained gravel path runs about 1.5km from the car park to the foot of the 80m waterfall, roughly 20 minutes each way. It is gentle and family friendly, though the gravel makes buggies hard work.

About
Mahon Falls is an 80-metre waterfall plunging off the Comeragh Mountains into a rocky coum, reached by a gentle gravel path from a free car park. It is one of Waterford's most accessible and most photographed natural sights.
Things to Do
Valley and coastal views
From the falls, and from the rocks just above them, you look back down the Coum Mahon valley towards Dungarvan bay and the sea. Climbing a little higher rewards you with the best outlook on a clear day.
The longer Mahon Valley loop
Beyond the falls a 4.2km loop climbs about 321m for a tougher 2-2.5 hour circuit over boggy, sometimes pathless ground; the full 11km route on to Coum Tay takes around 4 hours. Wear boots and carry a map.
The Magic Road
Just below the car park, stop on the Magic Road and put the car in neutral - it appears to roll uphill, a much-loved local illusion. Watch for other traffic while you try it.
Plan Your Visit
- Hours: Open year-round with no closing times; the site is unstaffed. Early mornings and weekdays are quietest.
- Parking: A free car park sits right at the trailhead, a short walk from the falls, with wheelchair-accessible parking.
- Food: There is no café, shop or toilet on site - bring your own food and water. The nearest village is Mahon Bridge, at the foot of the access road.
