Ireland's most haunted castle — a privately owned 16th-century fortress with a blood-soaked history, home to the notorious Bloody Chapel, a spine-filled oubliette, and an elemental spirit that's drawn paranormal investigators from around the world.
Every visit is a personal tour led by owner Sean Ryan, a folk musician who has lived here since 1991. He guides you through the castle's rooms, sharing deep knowledge of its O'Carroll and Darby history alongside his own eerie experiences. Tours last about 45–60 minutes. You must book ahead by phone or email.
This bare stone chamber is where an O'Carroll priest was murdered by his own brother during mass in the 16th century — the priest fell across the altar in front of the gathered family. Neighbours still report seeing light streaming from its windows at night.
Hidden beneath the Bloody Chapel floor, this narrow dungeon was where the O'Carrolls dumped prisoners — dead or alive. Rediscovered in the early 1900s, it yielded three cartloads of human skeletons impaled on wooden spikes. Now covered, its grim story is recounted on the tour.
Sean Ryan tells of the castle's regulars: the Red Lady (a tall figure in a blood-red dress clutching a dagger), the child ghosts Emily and Charlotte who play on the stairwell, the murdered woman who screams twice before vanishing, and the sulphurous Elemental — a grey, sheep-sized entity Mildred Darby famously encountered in the early 1900s.
The keep dates to the early 1500s, with spiral stone staircases, heavy timber beams, stone vaults, and original coats of arms. Parts of the castle remain in ruins from the 1922 fire, adding to the atmosphere. The Great Hall and Priest's House show the layers of medieval and Gothic remodelling.
October brings special evening programming: weeknight ghost walks with detailed storytelling, and a candle-lit Halloween Night Tour (usually the last Friday of October) with a professional paranormal investigator. Spaces are very limited — book well ahead.
