Access is by guided tour only, lasting one hour. A guide leads you through the cold, echoing corridors, cramped cells, the prison chapel, and the Victorian East Wing. Tours run throughout the day but must be pre-booked online — tickets are released 28 days in advance and sell out quickly.
The tour's final outdoor stop is the yard where 14 leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed by firing squad. A simple cross marks the spot — one of the most solemn places in modern Irish history.
Running until 31 October 2026, this free exhibition displays secret photographs taken inside Kilmainham Gaol in 1921 during the War of Independence. No ticket required — admission to the exhibition is free.

After the tour, explore the self-guided museum at your own pace. Exhibits display original artefacts, personal belongings of prisoners, and detailed panels covering the Gaol's role from 1796 to its closure in 1924. The Picture Gallery on the ground floor offers a quiet place to sit.
