A breezy hilltop park just south of Dublin with one of the best coastal panoramas in Ireland — city, sea, and mountains from a single 153m summit, reached in under 20 minutes.
The stone obelisk at the top was built in 1742 as famine-relief work. From here you get a 360° panorama: Dublin city and Howth to the north, the Irish Sea and (on a clear day) the mountains of Wales to the east, and Bray Head with the Wicklow Mountains to the south. Benches and grassy areas make it a natural picnic spot.
Tucked behind gorse hedges near the obelisk is a small stepped pyramid built in 1852. Local tradition says: circle each tier, climb to the top, face St Begnet's Oratory on Dalkey Island, and make a wish.
A short walk across the park takes you to Dalkey Hill and the dramatic granite face of Dalkey Quarry. The 30–40m cliffs are now a popular rock-climbing venue. Perimeter paths let you watch climbers in action and take in views over Dún Laoghaire harbour — which was built with stone from this very quarry.
Several well-maintained trails weave through the park. The short loop from the car park to the obelisk and back is about 700m (30 mins). The full Killiney–Dalkey Hill loop is roughly 2.5km (50 mins). For a longer outing, link down to Vico Road and Killiney Beach — about 9.5km round trip.
A short downhill stroll from the park brings you to Killiney Beach, a long pebbly strand framed by cliffs. Look for Fred & Nancy's — a retro Airstream coffee trailer serving flat whites and sausage sandwiches right on the beach.
Just below the hill, the Vico Baths are a beloved local swimming spot. A few minutes further, tiny Sorrento Park and Dillon's Park offer postcard views of Dalkey Island, its Martello Tower, and the 7th-century ruins of St Begnet's Church.
