Kanturk Castle, known locally as the Old Court, is a great limestone house begun around 1601 for MacDonagh MacCarthy, Lord of Duhallow, and abandoned unfinished — a roofless shell open to the sky on a low rise south of the town, free to visit all year.
The interior is closed off and structurally unsafe, so this is an outside visit: a slow circuit of a four-storey limestone block with a five-storey tower at each corner. The shell has stood open to the sky since work was halted in the early 1600s, when the English Privy Council grew alarmed at its scale.
The massively built, fully corbelled corner towers — rising about 29 m — show how the defensive plan was meant to work, and the rear walls carry gun loops.
On the north front is a finely carved limestone door surround with pilasters, a round arch and a classical frieze — among the best early-1600s classical carving in rural Cork.
Several fireplaces survive in the shell, the third-storey one with a boldly carved mantel, while pointed Irish tower-house arches sit beside fashionable Tudor mullioned windows.
From the foot of the towers the ground falls away towards where the Allow and Dalua rivers meet, and on-site panels fill in the castle's history.
