Join a guided tour to see over 70 rooms of neoclassical splendour — from the grand formal rooms, nursery, and guest suite upstairs to the vast servants' wing below stairs. Your volunteer guide brings the Smith-Barry family story to life. The house also holds one of the finest collections of Irish landscape paintings outside the National Gallery. Tours run at 12pm and 2pm daily (plus 3:30pm in July & August); arrive 10 minutes early.
Stroll through 11 acres of rare and tender trees from around the world, thriving in Fota's sheltered microclimate. Don't miss the Italianate sunken garden, orangery, ornamental pond, and the exquisite rose collection. The arboretum is free to enter and open daily year-round.
Step into the restored walled garden with its working glasshouses and pit houses — once the engine room of the estate, now buzzing again with volunteers propagating plants and growing produce. Chat with the gardeners, buy plants, and enjoy the pollinator-friendly wildflower beds. Open weekdays 10:30am–4:45pm, weekends 12pm–4:45pm (mid-March to September).
The Café at Fota House, run by The Food Club, serves hearty lunches, salads, sandwiches, teas, coffees, and sweet treats, with gluten-free and vegetarian options available. The gift shop sells Fota's own jams and dressings, cards by local artists, Irish books, and heritage-inspired gifts.
Fota is the only island in Ireland with its own railway station — a stop on the Cork–Cobh commuter line, granted to the Smith-Barry family in 1862. The house is a 10-minute walk from Fota station. Trains run regularly from Cork city.
